We don?t get Volkwagen?s Crafter in the US, but the automaker?s new Atacama concept has us harboring illicit thoughts about Dodge Sprinter?the closest thing we can get to the German load-lugger over here.

Created by the Design Center in Wolfsburg, the concept is named after South America?s Atacama desert, and will be shown at the IAA Fair in Hannover, Germany beginning tomorrow.

The base Crafter Transporter has been transformed, given a lifted four-wheel-drive setup, sizeable wheel arches, and that unique sideways U-shaped rear window treatment. Aluminum has been used extensively, including in the radiator, air vents and headlamp housings. 20-inch alloy wheels with suitably knobby tires complete the look.

Powered by diesel five-pot, the short-wheelbase Crafter Atacama isn?t likely to set any speed records, but when it looks this cool, who cares?
